Sega's $5 Million Bet Helped Keep Nvidia Alive in Its Early Days

Nvidia almost never became the chip giant it is today. The company was struggling in its early years, and a single $5 million investment from Sega is what kept it afloat. Without that money, Nvidia might have folded before it ever had a chance to dominate the graphics card market.

The story goes back to the mid-1990s. Nvidia had signed a contract with Sega to build a graphics chip for the Sega Dreamcast console. But the project fell apart. Nvidia's founder, Jensen Huang, realized the company's approach was wrong and that the chip they were designing would not work well. He made the difficult call to cancel the contract. That cash injection gave Nvidia the breathing room it needed to develop its next product, the Riva TNT, which eventually led to the GeForce line.
