5 Classic PS1 Games That Are Unplayable Today

The PlayStation 1 library is filled with legendary titles that defined a generation. But surprisingly, some of the console's biggest and most acclaimed games are no longer playable on modern hardware. Here are five classic PS1 games that have become nearly impossible to experience today.

First up is "Tomba!" This colorful 2D platformer was a critical darling but never saw a proper re-release. The original discs are rare and expensive, and the game has never been added to the PlayStation Store or any modern compilation. If you don't own a working PS1 and a copy of the disc, you are out of luck.

Next is "Silent Hill." While later entries in the series have been remastered or ported, the original 1999 survival horror game remains trapped on the PS1. The rights issues with Konami and the original music licenses have made a re-release legally complicated. The same problem plagues "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night," which despite a few re-releases, has had its iconic soundtrack altered in later versions, making the original PS1 disc the only way to hear it as intended.

Then there is "Suikoden II." This role-playing game is considered one of the best ever made, but its physical copies sell for hundreds of dollars. It was briefly available on the PS3 store, but that storefront is now closed. Without a time machine and a lot of cash, new players simply cannot play it.

Finally, "Spyro the Dragon" is a strange case. The original PS1 trilogy was remastered beautifully in the "Spyro Reignited Trilogy." However, that collection changed the art style, music, and voice acting. The original, gritty, low-poly versions of these games are not available anywhere. The only way to play them as they were in 1998 is to find an old console and a disc. For these five titles, the original experience has truly vanished.
