New research has drawn a direct line between the purchase of randomized digital items in video games and a significant increase in problem gambling among adults. The study indicates that players who buy "loot boxes" -- virtual containers that offer random rewards -- report much higher rates of severe betting issues compared to those who do not engage with the feature.
The findings suggest that the financial and psychological risks of these in-game purchases closely mirror those of traditional casino games. Loot boxes typically require real money or in-game currency, yet the player has no control over what they receive, creating a reward system based on chance. Researchers argue this mechanism closely resembles slot machines or roulette, which can trigger addictive behaviors.
The data shows a strong correlation between the frequency of loot box purchases and the severity of gambling problems. Adults who bought these items were far more likely to score high on standard gambling addiction assessments. Critics of the gaming industry have long warned that these mechanics normalize gambling for younger audiences, but the new study highlights that the risk extends to adult players as well.
Advocacy groups are now calling for tighter regulations, including age restrictions and clearer labeling of odds. Some countries have already classified certain loot boxes as illegal gambling, but the practice remains widespread globally. The study's authors emphasize that while not every buyer develops a problem, the structural similarities to casino games create a clear and measurable public health concern.
