The popular online gaming platform Roblox is implementing a significant change to its user accounts, directly tied to the age of its players. This move comes as the company faces a growing number of lawsuits concerning child safety and inappropriate content on its platform.
Beginning in June, the system will automatically create "Roblox Kids" accounts for any user identified as being under the age of nine. These accounts will have the in-game chat function turned off by default, a measure designed to prevent unsolicited contact. Furthermore, the content accessible to these younger players will be heavily filtered and censored to align with early childhood standards.
The restructuring aims to provide a more tailored and secure experience for the platform's youngest users, who navigate a vast digital universe of games created by other users. This age-based segmentation is a direct response to persistent criticism and legal challenges from parents and regulators. They have raised concerns about the potential for exposure to mature themes and interactions with strangers within the open-ended platform.
By creating these distinct digital spaces, Roblox seeks to bolster its parental controls and safety infrastructure. The company emphasizes that these changes are part of an ongoing effort to ensure its environment is appropriate for all age groups, particularly as its user base continues to expand globally with a significant portion being minors.
