McDonald’s Rolls Out In-Game Rewards For World of Warcraft and Overwatch, But There’s A Catch

McDonald’s Rolls Out In-Game Rewards For World of Warcraft and Overwatch, But There’s A Catch

McDonald's is testing a new crossover that ties its food purchases to digital loot for two of Blizzard's biggest games. Players in certain countries can now unlock exclusive in-game items and cosmetic rewards by buying specific menu items, but the promotion comes with a notable limitation.

The fast food giant has partnered with Blizzard Entertainment to offer themed rewards for World of Warcraft and Overwatch. For World of Warcraft, the deal includes a special in-game pet or mount, depending on the region. Overwatch players, meanwhile, can grab a unique skin or player icon tied to the promotion. The items are not available for direct purchase, so the only way to get them is through a McDonald's transaction.

Here is the catch: the offer is only live in a handful of markets, mostly in Europe and parts of Asia. The United States is not included at launch, and there is no word on whether it will expand. Also, each reward is tied to a single code printed on the receipt, and the code must be redeemed within a short window. That means you cannot stockpile codes or share them after the expiration date.

For now, the promotion feels like a small test rather than a full global rollout. McDonald's has dabbled in gaming tie-ins before, but this is its first direct link to Blizzard's massive player base. If the pilot goes well, expect to see it hit more countries down the line. Until then, players outside the eligible regions will have to watch from the sidelines.
