A long-lost Star Wars project has finally stepped out of the shadows. Fans have gotten their first real look at a cancelled cooperative action role-playing game from developer Echtra Games, known internally as "Magellan." The studio, which previously worked on the Torchlight series, was reportedly building a Star Wars title that never made it to release.
Newly shared gameplay footage and animation tests reveal a project that was clearly ambitious. The clips show a third-person perspective with fast-paced combat, lightsaber and blaster mechanics, and a strong focus on two-player co-op. The visual style leans toward a stylized, slightly cartoonish look, which would have set it apart from the more grounded tone of other Star Wars games at the time. The animations appear fluid, with clear attention paid to character movement and enemy reactions.
The project was in development for a while before being shelved. Sources suggest that the cancellation came down to shifting priorities at the publisher level, not because of any creative or technical failure. The team had reportedly built a playable vertical slice, and the footage circulating now seems to confirm that a solid foundation was already in place.
For fans of the franchise, this is another reminder of the many Star Wars games that never saw the light of day. While "Magellan" is unlikely to ever be revived, the leaked footage offers a bittersweet glimpse of what could have been. It also highlights the talent at Echtra Games, which continues to work on other projects. The full animation reel and gameplay clips are now making the rounds online, giving players a chance to imagine what might have been.
