Video game publishers have been testing a troubling trend: locking early access to major releases behind a paywall. Players can buy a standard edition, or they can pay extra for a "deluxe" or "premium" tier that lets them start playing days before the official launch. The pitch is simple: pay more, play sooner. But when those early days are plagued by server crashes, game-breaking bugs, or missing features, the deal turns sour fast.
The problem is that early access periods are often the most unstable part of a game's lifecycle. Servers buckle under unexpected load, day-one patches arrive late, and critical issues that should have been caught in testing suddenly appear. When a player pays a premium to be among the first to experience a game, they are essentially paying to be a beta tester. That is not what they signed up for.
If a publisher charges extra for early access, they have a responsibility to make sure that early access actually works. If it does not, they owe players something in return. That could be refunds, in-game currency, exclusive cosmetics, or an extension of the early access window. Anything less is a broken promise.
Some companies have started to offer small compensation packages after botched launches, but the industry as a whole still treats these failures as acceptable. They are not. When money changes hands for a specific benefit, and that benefit is not delivered, the customer deserves a make-good. Otherwise, the practice is just a way to squeeze more money out of loyal fans while treating early access as an optional risk. It should not be optional. It should be guaranteed.
