Video Game History Foundation releases major new E3 archive collections

The Video Game History Foundation has launched a major new set of digital archives focused on the Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3. The collection aims to preserve the legacy of the annual trade show that, for decades, served as the central stage for the video game industry's biggest announcements.

The newly released materials include hundreds of hours of recorded press conferences, behind-the-scenes footage, and marketing materials from E3 events spanning the 1990s through the 2010s. According to the foundation, the archive captures not just the polished presentations seen by the public, but also the chaotic energy of the show floor, developer interviews, and the evolving culture of the industry.

Researchers and historians will find detailed documentation of how major companies like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft used the expo to shape public perception and compete for market dominance. The collection also highlights smaller developers and peripheral events that contributed to E3's unique atmosphere.

The foundation noted that much of this material was at risk of being lost as physical media degrades and corporate archives are discarded. By digitizing and organizing these records, the VGHF hopes to provide a reliable resource for journalists, academics, and fans interested in understanding how the industry's biggest trade show influenced game development, marketing, and consumer culture. The archive is now available online for non-commercial use.
