A quiet revolution has reshaped player expectations over the last decade. The demand for games to receive endless, substantial updates after launch has become a default position for many in the community. This shift, moving away from the traditional model of a "finished" product, creates significant friction between developers and players when updates are slow, underwhelming, or simply not part of the plan.
The perception that developers are "lazy" for not meeting these constant demands is a harmful oversimplification. Game development is a complex, resource-intensive process. Post-launch support, especially for live-service titles, requires dedicated teams for new content creation, bug fixing, and balance changes, pulling focus from future projects. For smaller studios or games designed as complete experiences, perpetual updates may be financially or creatively impossible.
This cycle often stems from the incredible success of games that have mastered the live-service model, setting a new benchmark for all. However, treating every game as a platform for endless growth is unsustainable. Clearer communication from studios about their long-term vision—whether it's a defined series of expansions or a single, polished release—could help manage expectations. Ultimately, recognizing that a great game can be a finite experience is a healthier approach for an industry straining under the weight of its own endless updates.
