'Star Fox' is an eye-catching reimagining of a timeless sci-fi classic, but we've been here before

Nintendo and Velan Studios have delivered a high-fidelity remake of "Star Fox 64" for the Switch 2, and the result is an eye-catching reimagining of a timeless sci-fi classic. The game brings the iconic Lylat System conflict into sharp, modern focus with crisp visuals and smooth performance that make the Arwing feel alive again. For longtime fans, the opening sequence alone is enough to spark a wave of nostalgia as Fox McCloud and his team barrel through Corneria at breakneck speed.

But here is the catch: we have been here before. Despite the graphical overhaul, this remake sticks closely to the original 1997 blueprint. The branching paths, the familiar boss fights, and the voice lines are all present and accounted for. There are no major deviations from the structure that made the N64 version a beloved arcade shooter. The controls have been tightened for the Switch 2's hardware, and the gyroscopic aiming adds a new layer of precision, but the core experience remains unchanged.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. The game is still a blast. The arcade-y feel of dodging enemy fire, charging up your laser, and pulling off a barrel roll to deflect missiles is as satisfying as ever. The new visual fidelity makes the explosions pop and the environments feel more immersive. Yet for players hoping for a bold new direction or a reimagined story, this remake may feel like a safe, familiar flight rather than a leap into uncharted space. It is a polished tribute, but one that leaves you wondering what could have been.
