South Side Teens Can Learn Coding, Game Design And More At New Teen Tech Space

A new technology hub has opened on Chicago's South Side, giving local teenagers a place to explore coding, game design, and other digital skills. The Best Buy Teen Tech Center, located inside the Gary Comer Youth Center, is designed to help young people discover careers and opportunities in the tech industry, according to campus leaders.

The space is equipped with computers, recording equipment, and tools for 3D printing. Teens can also learn video production, graphic design, and music creation. The goal is to provide a hands-on environment where students can build real-world skills outside of a traditional classroom.

Program coordinators say the center is meant to close the digital divide and give South Side youth a chance to work with technology they might not have access to at home or school. The space is free for teens to use and includes mentorship from tech professionals.

Organizers hope the center will inspire young people to consider careers in fields like software development, engineering, and digital media. The Gary Comer Youth Center already runs after-school programs and college prep services, and the new tech space adds a focused pathway into the growing technology sector.

The center is open to teens in the surrounding neighborhoods. No prior experience is required to join.
