The PlayStation Portal has been out for a while now, and the initial skepticism has largely faded. What remains is a device that is undeniably a luxury, but one that delivers exactly what it promises: a dedicated, high-quality way to play your PS5 anywhere in the house. It is not a standalone console, and it never pretended to be. Instead, it is a specialized tool for Remote Play, and in that narrow lane, it excels.
The first thing you notice is the ergonomics. Sony took the DualSense controller, split it in half, and attached a beautiful 8-inch LCD screen in the middle. The result is a handheld that feels perfectly balanced. The grips are substantial, the triggers and bumpers are satisfying, and the full suite of haptic feedback and adaptive triggers is present. Playing a game like Astro's Playroom or Returnal on the Portal feels nearly identical to playing on the TV, which is a technical achievement in itself.
Performance is the key selling point, and it largely delivers. On a strong home Wi-Fi network, the Remote Play connection is smooth and responsive. Input lag is minimal, and the 1080p 60fps stream looks crisp on the screen. There are occasional hiccups and compression artifacts, especially in fast-moving scenes, but these are rare. The biggest catch is that you need a solid network. If your router is weak or your PS5 is connected via Wi-Fi instead of ethernet, the experience can suffer from stuttering and blurriness.
The biggest downside remains the price. At launch, the Portal felt expensive for a device that only streams games. That feeling has not entirely gone away. It does not support Bluetooth headphones, forcing you to use Sony's proprietary PlayStation Link audio or a wired connection. It also lacks cloud streaming, meaning you cannot play anything without your PS5 turned on.
For the right person, however, the Portal is a game-changer. If you often find yourself fighting for the TV or want to play in bed or on the couch while someone else watches a show, this is the best way to do it. It is a niche product, but within that niche, it is nearly flawless.
