September is looking like a pileup. Surely at least a couple games will swerve?
The calendar for next month is already stuffed with major releases, and the industry is holding its breath to see which ones actually stick the landing. We have a handful of heavy hitters all aiming for a September window, which raises a simple question: do we really think all of them are going to make it?
History says no. Every year, a few high-profile titles get pushed back from the fall rush, usually citing polish time or unforeseen bugs. This year, the list includes a new entry in a beloved action franchise, a long-awaited space sim, and a couple of ambitious RPGs. That is a lot of code to finish in a few weeks.
The problem is that September sits right before the holiday crunch. Publishers want to hit that sweet spot before October and November get crowded, but the margin for error is razor thin. If one game slips, it can domino into a reshuffled release schedule for everyone else. Developers are already working overtime, and we have seen enough delayed launches to know that promises made in summer often break by autumn.
So, while the lineup looks exciting on paper, do not be surprised if at least two or three of these titles announce a delay in the coming weeks. The smart money is on a quieter September than the current hype suggests.
