‘Mortal Kombat II’ Review: Definitely Not a Flawless Victory

If you grew up in the 1980s or 1990s, you probably heard at least one adult warn you that video games were a waste of time, or worse, that they would rot your brain. If that sounds familiar, do yourself a favor and keep the new "Mortal Kombat II" movie away from that person. They will not be impressed.

The sequel to the 2021 reboot tries hard to capture the over-the-top violence and dark fantasy of the games, but it stumbles more than it lands. The plot is thin, even by fighting game standards. Characters like Johnny Cage, played with a smirk by Karl Urban, chew up the scenery, but the story feels like a series of cutscenes stitched together to get to the next fight. The action is brutal, with plenty of blood and bone-crunching hits, but the choreography lacks the crispness that made the games iconic. Some fights drag on, and the CGI in a few scenes looks unfinished, which pulls you out of the experience.

The cast does what they can. Hiroyuki Sanada brings weight to Scorpion, and Ludi Lin is solid as Liu Kang. But the script gives them little to work with beyond one-liners and exposition. The movie tries to balance fan service with a coherent narrative, and it fails at both. Hardcore fans will spot references to the games, but they will also notice characters who appear and vanish without explanation. Casual viewers will likely get lost in the muddy plot.

"Flawless Victory" is a phrase the games made famous. This movie is not that. It is messy, loud, and often silly. It might entertain you for a couple of hours, but it will not change anyone's mind about video game movies. And it will definitely not convince that skeptical grandparent that games are art.
