Legacy of Atlantis developers address yellow paint debate and the challenge of modernising the original Tomb Raider

Flying Wild Hog has opened up about the delicate process of bringing Lara Croft back to her roots, addressing the polarising "yellow paint" trend and the difficulty of updating a 90s icon for modern audiences. In a recent interview, the studio acknowledged that while the original Tomb Raider games were defined by their brutal, cryptic level design, today's players expect clearer visual cues. This has led to the controversial use of bright yellow handholds and ledges, a design choice that has sparked heated debate among purists.

The developers explained that the goal is not to dumb down the experience but to reduce frustration. "We are not trying to hold the player's hand," one lead designer stated. "But the original game was often unfair. You would die because you missed a pixel-thin ledge against a brown wall. That is not fun. It is just punishing." The team stressed that the yellow paint is a compromise, allowing them to preserve the sprawling, non-linear level layouts of the original while making traversal readable on high-definition screens.

Beyond the paint debate, Flying Wild Hog detailed the broader challenge of modernising the 1996 classic. They described the original controls as "tank-like" and the camera as "hostile." The studio has rebuilt the movement system from the ground up, aiming for fluid, responsive platforming that still feels weighty and deliberate. They are also reworking enemy encounters to be more dynamic, moving away from the original's static, room-by-room combat. The goal, they say, is to make the game feel like a modern action-adventure without losing the eerie, isolated atmosphere that made the original a landmark title. The result, they hope, is a Lara Croft who is both familiar and reborn.
