I have been playing video games for four decades and writing about them for two. In all that time, I have never seen a platform quite like Roblox. And I do not mean that as a compliment. While it markets itself as a harmless creative sandbox for children, certain core mechanics of this ecosystem are a disgrace. They are predatory, exploitative, and frankly, regulators need to step in and legislate parts of it out of existence.
The problem is not the user-generated worlds or the blocky avatars. The problem is the economy. Roblox operates a closed loop where kids use real money to buy a virtual currency called Robux. That currency is then used to purchase cosmetic items, game passes, and "loot boxes" that offer random rewards. This is a textbook definition of a gambling mechanic aimed at minors. The platform is flooded with experiences designed to drain a child's allowance by dangling rare virtual hats or limited-edition animations in front of them.
the platform acts as a massive, unregulated marketplace for user-generated content. Children are not just playing; they are working. Many spend hours building games or items, hoping to earn a cut of the Robux spent in their creations. The payout system is opaque, and the company takes a massive 75% cut of every transaction. It is a system that treats young developers as unpaid interns for a multi-billion dollar corporation. The constant pressure to monetize, the gambling-like loot boxes, and the lack of meaningful consumer protection make Roblox a dangerous environment. It is time for governments to stop treating it like a toy and start regulating it like the financial product it actually is.
