The European Commission announced on Tuesday that it will facilitate discussions between video-game publishers and consumer groups, following the rejection of a citizens' initiative that sought formal EU legislation to preserve so-called "end-of-life" video games. The initiative, which gathered over a million signatures, argued that publishers often abandon older titles, making them unplayable due to server shutdowns or incompatible hardware.
While the Commission declined to propose new laws, it acknowledged the cultural and economic value of game preservation. A spokesperson stated that voluntary industry cooperation could address concerns more effectively than regulation. The talks aim to explore solutions such as open-source code releases, emulation rights, or extended support for classic games.
Critics argue that without binding rules, publishers will continue to let titles fade away. Supporters of the initiative expressed disappointment but welcomed the dialogue. The Commission plans to publish a report on the discussions by early next year, potentially shaping future policy if voluntary measures fail.
