The European Commission has officially declined to act on the "Stop Killing Games" petition, ending a two-year campaign that sought to force publishers to keep older digital titles playable. The decision, announced this week, means that video game companies can continue to legally shut down servers and remove access to purchased games without facing EU-wide penalties.
The initiative, which collected over 380,000 signatures across Europe, argued that disabling a game after selling it constitutes a form of planned obsolescence and consumer fraud. Supporters claimed that when a publisher turns off the servers for a game that requires an online connection to function, the product is effectively destroyed. They wanted the Commission to classify this practice as illegal under existing EU consumer protection laws.
However, the Commission ruled that current legislation does not cover this specific scenario. Officials stated that while consumers have rights regarding faulty products, a game being taken offline after several years of service does not qualify as a defect. The decision noted that publishers typically outline server shutdowns in their terms of service, and that players accept these conditions when they purchase the game.
The campaign's failure has disappointed many in the gaming community, particularly those who have lost access to beloved titles like "The Crew" and older MMOs. Some advocates now plan to shift their focus to national-level consumer protection agencies, hoping to achieve change country by country rather than through the EU as a whole. Others warn that without legal pressure, publishers will continue to treat older games as disposable, leaving digital libraries vulnerable to sudden extinction.
