Board, a new startup from Mirror founder Brynn Putnam, has secured $20 million in Series A funding led by Union Square Ventures. The company is focused on what it calls "together tech" -- hardware and software designed to pull people away from their individual screens and into the same physical space.
The company has already sold thousands of units since its quiet launch. Board's first product is a connected tabletop device that hosts simple, multiplayer games. Unlike a phone or a tablet, the device is meant to sit in a living room or a bar, inviting groups to play together without staring at their own devices.
Putnam, who previously founded the fitness mirror company Mirror and sold it to Lululemon, said the idea came from watching how people interact at home. "We have all this technology for working alone, for exercising alone, for watching content alone," she said. "There is almost nothing built for the experience of being together in a room."
The device uses touch and motion sensors to track gameplay. Early users have described it as a cross between a board game and a video game console, but without the need for controllers or a TV. The games are short and social, designed for groups of two to six people.
Union Square Ventures partner Andy Weissman said the firm was drawn to the company's focus on physical togetherness. "Most social apps are about connecting people who are far apart," he said. "Board is about making the time you spend with people in the same room better."
Board plans to use the new funding to expand its game library, hire engineers, and scale production. The company is also exploring partnerships with bars, restaurants, and co-working spaces. Putnam said the long-term goal is to build a platform that redefines how people socialize at home. "We are not making a gadget," she said. "We are making a new kind of room."
